Three individuals attempting to smuggle foreign cigarettes valued at approximately $17.85 \text{ million}$ rupees were arrested by police at the Katunayake Airport after arriving on an Emirates flight from Dubai yesterday (25). The suspects, identified as businessmen from Aluthgama, Yatiyanthota, and Mawanella, were caught with $595$ cartons containing $119,000$ “Platinum” cigarettes in their luggage. Upon being produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court, the three were each ordered to pay a fine of $3 \text{ lakh}$ rupees, and the seized cigarettes, valued at $9 \text{ lakh}$ rupees, were forfeited to the state.
